Are visual representations always helpful in the communication of knowledge? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and mathematics.

This is wild and I’ve never suggested this before – I’d include visuals in the TOK essay, but you need to do this carefully.

This prompt has the key word always, which gives you something to say in the conclusion. Your final answer, in the conclusion, should be yes always, or no.

If you want to, you can clarify what helpful means. But don’t waste words. Unless you want to define helpful in an unusual way, there’s no need to define this term.

Different learning styles – auditory, visual, kinesthetic. The always can depend on the receiver of knowledge.

There’s a great quote by Mark Twain:

You can assume many students will use this quote in their introduction, but it’s still a good quote

If you open with a quote, make sure you refer back to it later.

Maths – charts and statistics. If it is using numbers to communicate knowledge, it should work. Be careful mixing AOK’s!

Be careful with the wording: visual representation and communicating knowledge. Not about visuals being used in a study. Not about studying things visually, such as when we think about anthropology. This is about how we communicate knowledge we already have.
